Alien Secret Messages
Year 6 investigated which substance had been used for the ink on the secret messages that a missing Alien communication scientist has been investigating. They decided if the substance was an alkali or an acid by using a ph indicator (cabbage water) and then decided which substance would have been the best for the aliens to use to write their secret messages.
Year 6 were given the task of designing a rocket that could be launched to Mars in order to rescue the kidnapped scientist. They used previous understanding to create a chemical reaction, that when contained, would cause a build up of pressure. They learnt that a pressure build up would cause an action which would result in an equal, yet opposite reaction, hence the vertical thrust of the rocket. They related this to Newton’s third law of motion.
Year 6 also investigated if the amount of vinegar used to create the chemical reaction would affect the height that the rocket would go.
