Autumn Term 2014-2015
Year 2 have been learning all about Castles this term. We have enjoyed using our role play area to learn about life in the medieval times. It has been great fun dressing up as Knights, Lords and Ladies of Eastcroft Castle and it has helped us to learn how different our lives would be if we lived in a castle in the medieval times.
In Year 2 we love to read and we also enjoy listening to stories in our class reading area. Sometimes we climb into our reading igloo to read with our friends. It's a good job it's not cold in there!
In Year 2 have been learning how to send and receive emails during our computing lessons. We were really excited when we emailed our Autumn Term author Babette Cole. Babette emailed us straight back, answering all our questions we had asked her about being a famous children's author. We have loved reading her books including Dr Dog, Princess Smartypants and Two of Everything.
In November, Year 2 planted some daffodil bulbs in specially designed plant pots. We are going to look after the daffoldils over the winter and when the flowers have grown we will sell them to help raise money for the wonderful charity, Marie Curie. We cant wait to see what the flowers look like when they are fully grown!
Year 2 have been working really hard in P.E throughout the Autumn term and we have developed our skills in dance and gymnastics. We can use the equipment safely and can perform a range of movements on different equipment showing how we can move, balance, jump and turn in a sequence. We love P.E and are already excited for what we wil learn in the Spring Term.

We have completed some excellent writing about London and we have made postcards after travelling around London on our London bus.
During this term we have been working hard with Mrs Brown to learn a song all about the Great Fire of London. We have looked at pitch and rhythm during our music work and we learnt how to sing the song in the round, where we were split into groups and we start singing at different times. We had to really concentrate but it sounds really good!

During our topic of London we had to design a puppet as part of our Design and Technology work. We had to design a puppet based on a famous London job that would be suitable for a new puppet show in the West End. We looked at lots of different types of puppets and we made a prototype to see how we will join our puppets. Finally we made our final designs which was a lot of fun!
After taking good care of our daffodil bulbs over the winter, we have watched them grow into lovely daffodils that we sold to our parents, carers and teachers to raise money for Marie Curie. We raised over £150 which will help fund Marie Curie nurses who look after people who are terminally ill. We were really pleased we could help such a wonderful cause.
We have completed lots of wonderful through our Maths work during the Spring Term. We have learnt a lot about measuring including capacity and weight. We know what right angles are and how to find them and Mrs Woods taught how to use a Carroll Diagram to sort things. We have made excellent progress in our Maths this term and we are all excited to learn even more over the Summer term.
We love writing in Year 2 and over the year we have completed some fantastic work during our Big Write sessions. You can really see how our writing has improved over the year when you read our Big Write files and we are going to keep getting better and better over the Summer Term. We have completed lots of writing related to our topic of London and through our Literacy topic of poetry. We even used our Under the Sea themed hall to complete some sea themed poetry and a diary extract as if we were an Under the Sea explorer. We can even work as a class to use a visualiser to up-level each others writing.

During the Summer Term, Year 2 are learning all about Gardens. We have been learning about plants and how they grow in science, involving some exciting investigation work. We have planted beans and left them in different areas of the school to find out what the best conditions are for plants to be able to grow! We have been spending time in our wonderful garden centre play area. We love working in the garden centre looking after all the beautiful flowers and selling seeds and garden tools to our lovely customers. We have completed some excellent writing about Gardens including our very own garden stories and non-fiction writing about creepy crawlies that we might come across in our gardens.
During this term we have been working hard with Mrs Brown during our music lessons learning songs all about minibeasts, our favourite was Grosshopper Hop. We had to decide what instruments we thought sounded most like different kinds of creatures and came up with some fantastic adjectives to describe how minibeasts move. As well as performing our Grasshopper Hop song, we had a go at composing. We were split into groups and worked together to make a piece of music using a selection of instruments that sounded like the minibeast we were given, the other groups had to guess what minibeast we were. We had lots of fun, thank you Mrs Brown!
We have completed lots of wonderful work in Maths during the Summer Term. We have worked extra hard on making sure that we understand place value, we played fun games to help us understand where Hundreds, Tens and Units are in a number. We have learnt a lot about 3D shapes and their properties and even went on a shape hunt around the school to see how many 3D shapes we could find. We have been collecting our own data to find out how year 2 travels to school, and recorded our data in pictograms and bar charts. We have also been working very hard to solve some tricky word problems using all four operations. We have made excellent progress in our Maths this term and we are going to continue to develop our maths knowledge until the end of Year 2!
