Friday 19th June 2015

Year 5 have worked very hard completing some assessments this week! 

Reminders:

Our end of year trip is nearly here! Year 5 are visiting the Chester Zoo on Friday 26th June, if you haven't done so already please return permission slips and money contributions to school ASAP. 

Next Monday 22nd June forest rangers will be visiting our school to complete a number of forest based activities with the children. Please ensure the children bring suitable clothing into school to change into in the afternoon.

KS2 Sports Day will take place on Tuesday 23rd June the children will need to come into school wearing their full school PE kit (white T-shirt, black shorts and trainers/ pumps). The children will receive a drink and a snack at a cost of 50p, please send this into school if you haven't done so already ASAP. 

Children's University will take place on Thursday 1st July, we are very pleased that a number of children in Year 5 are graduating this year! If your child is graduating this year please sign the permission slip and send the contribution into school, again if you have not done so already ASAP. We look forward to seeing you at the ceremony.

We have had another good week in Year 5, we particularly enjoyed our rainforest writing adventure! 

Reminders:

Friday 5th June 2015

We have had a fantastic first week back. In English this week the children wrote some excellent Titanic poems with outstanding language! In maths week the children explored 2D shapes and their properties. The children had lots of fun getting messy for 'Let's Get Messy Week!' We created prints based on rainforest leaves and carved toucans into foil using embossing. Year 5 were even lucky enough to have a visit from Faith Bebbington a local artist, she helped us create some fantastic sculptures based around the topic of Space! 

Reminders:

Year 5 have PE on Tuesday and Thursday, please ensure the children have a full PE kit in school on these days.

Friday 22nd May 2015

In English this week the children have begun exploring poetry; they have written some excellent sea poems inspired by our beautiful hall. In maths they have enjoyed telling the time using analogue and 24 hour clocks and working out time problems. 

Homework:

Homework needs to be completed and returned to school on or before Wednesday 4th June 2015. If the children have any problems with this homework they can speak to us on the first Monday or Tuesday back. 

Topic:The children have been given a rainforest booklet. They need to complete each of the activities in this booklet. The activities include: creating a rainforest animal,  creating a rainforest poem, finding words within words and writing a rainforest survival guide.

In English this week the children have created some fantastic newspaper reports. In maths they have enjoyed investigating angles. 

Homework:

Homework needs to be completed and returned to school on or before Wednesday 20th May 2015. If the children have any problems with this homework they can speak to us on Monday or Tuesday. 

English: The children need to complete the worksheet about rhyme and alliteration. 

Maths: The children need to complete the questions about angles.

This week the children really enjoyed exploring the new artwork soon arriving in Kirkby through the creative workshop, we all cannot wait to see them!

Homework:

Homework needs to be completed and returned to school on or before Wednesday 13th May 2015. If the children have any problems with this homework they can speak to us on Monday or Tuesday. 

English: The children need to complete the worksheet exploring the plural spelling rules.

Maths: The children need to complete the questions about the properties of 2D shapes.

Friday 1st May 2015

This week the children have been exploring volume in maths. In English the children worked hard writing police reports based on the story 'Tuesday'. Year 5 have finished swimming now and all the children have worked extremely hard and made some excellent progress. 

Homework:

Homework needs to be completed and returned to school on or before Wednesday 6th May 2015. If the children have any problems with this homework they can speak to us on Tuesday. 

English: The children need to write their own report about a chosen subject. 

Maths: The children need to complete the addition calculations using the shown method. 

Your child has also been given spellings and times-tables this week; please ensure they work through these in preparation for their test next week.

Friday 24th April 2015

This week the children have been exploring perimeter and area in maths. In English the children used the display in our Infant hall to write some fantastic diary entries about an adventure under the sea! 

Homework:

Homework needs to be completed and returned to school on or before Wednesday 29th April 2015. If the children have any problems with this homework they can speak to us on Monday or Tuesday. 

English: The children need to read the report and answer the given questions about the report. 

Maths: The children need to calculate the area of the given shapes. 

Reminders:

Year 5 will be going swimming again next week, everyday except Friday. Please ensure your child brings the following each day: swimming costume/ trunks, towel, comb/ brush and swimming cap.

Thursday 2nd April 2015

All the children have worked very hard this week completing their assessments! 

Reminders:

Year 5 will be going to Kirkby Leisure Centre for swimming lessons everyday (except Friday) for the first two weeks back after the holidays, beginning Monday 20th April 2015. Please ensure your child brings the following each day: swimming costume/ trunks, towel, comb/ brush and swimming cap. If you haven't already could you please ensure you return the permission slip on the first Monday back too, without permission your child will be unable to attend. We will also be leaving school at 9am so it is important that each child is in school on time.

Friday 27th March 2015

This week the children have been exploring biographies in English and have written some super biographies about our Author this term; Anthony Horowitz! In maths this week, the children have worked hard using the short division method.  

Homework:

Homework needs to be completed and returned to school on or before Wednesday 1st April 2015. If the children have any problems with this homework they can speak to us on Monday or Tuesday. 

English: The children need to complete the punctuation worksheet, revising exclamation marks, question marks, commas and inverted commas. 

Maths: The children need to solve the division calculations. 

Your child has also been given spellings and times-tables this week; please ensure they work through these in preparation for their test next week.

Friday 20th March 2015

This week the children had a fantastic time creating a play in a day based on Ancient Greece! (Pictures to follow). 

Homework:

Homework needs to be completed and returned to school on or before Wednesday 25th March 2015. If the children have any problems with this homework they can speak to us on Monday or Tuesday. 

English: The children need to complete the activity sheet answering the questions about the biography. 

Maths: The children need to answer the questions multiplying and dividing the given numbers by 10 and 100. 

Your child has also been given spellings and times-tables this week; please ensure they work through these in preparation for their test next week.

Reminders:

Tuesday 24th March 2015 is review day, the children will need to attend school with you for a 10 minute meeting with us after which they are expected to return home. The children will need to be present for the meeting to gain their attendance mark. We look forward to seeing you all.

This week in English the children have finished their myths and legends, they did a fantastic job and should be very proud of themselves! In maths the children have worked hard adding and subtracting fractions.

Homework:

Homework needs to be completed and returned to school on or before Wednesday 11th February 2015. If the children have any problems with this homework they can speak to us on Monday or Tuesday. 

English: The children need to complete the activity sheet answering the questions involving using question marks correctly. 

Maths: The children need to order the fractions by finding equivalent fractions.

This week in English the children have began writing their myths and legends which are absolutely fantastic so far! In maths the children have worked hard converting improper fractions and mixed numbers. 

Homework:

Homework needs to be completed and returned to school on or before Wednesday 4th February 2015. If the children have any problems with this homework they can speak to us on Monday or Tuesday. 

English: The children need to complete the activity sheet following the rule for spelling words with 'ie' and 'ei'. 

Maths: The children need to convert the improper fractions to mixed numbers.

English: The children need to complete the spelling activity sheet. 

Maths: The children need to find the perimeter of the rectangles.

We have had a lovely week in year 5, we have been learning about parts of speech in English and multiplication methods in maths.

English: The children need to choose a picture and write a setting description using powerful language.

Maths: The children need to answer the multiplication sums by completing short multiplication or the grid method.

We would like to thank you all again for taking the time to attend the review day appointments last week. In maths this week the children have worked hard rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. In English the children have enjoyed creating a class poetry book!

Maths: The children need to round the numbers to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000.

We have had yet another fantastic week in Home 5 this week! In English  the children have produced some fantastic fantasy stories set in space! In maths this week the children have worked extremely hard finding equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions and ordering fractions.

Homework:

Homework needs to be completed and returned to school on or before Wednesday 19th November. If the children have any problems with this homework they can speak to us on Monday.

English: The children need to complete the book review about a book they have previously read.

Maths: The children need to answer the mental maths questions.

This week year 5 have had a fantastic week developing their scientific investigation skills by taking part in Big Bang Week! The children have worked hard erupting volcanoes, making balloon rockets and alien slime!

In English this week we continued our recounts topic. The children wrote some super newspaper articles recounting the moon landing! In maths this week the children have worked hard describing the properties of 2D shapes.

Homework:

Homework needs to be completed and returned to school on or before Wednesday 5th November. If the children have any problems with this homework they can speak to us on Monday or Tuesday of that week. 

English: The children need to improve the sentences following the tips.

Maths: The children need to name and describe the 2D shapes.

Your child has also been given times tables and spellings this week; please ensure they work through these in preparation for their tests on the first Wednesday back.
