AUTUMN TERM TOPIC
Home 5 recently began learning about Space! We have specifically enjoyed our music project with Mrs Hughes which is called "Journey into Space" as it has helped us to learn more about the milky-way and our solar system, whilst also developing our musical skills, ability and vocabulary. We have particularly enjoyed assigned pieces of music to describe each of the 8 planets!
As part of our space topic, Year 5 have explored the eight planets in our solar system, we have even created our own rhymes to help us remember the planets in order from the sun. Can you think of your own?
Acting out the universe
As part of our Science work, we researched the comparative sizes of the planets and went onto the yard to act out the universe! We made a large circle to represent the milky way, then 8 children were chosen to be the planets and Millie was the sun. We practiced rotating on our axes and orbiting the sun. It was really difficult to try to stay in the correct order and distance from the sun!
We then focussed on the Earth, Sun and Moon. We used a beach ball, grape and pea to try to help us understand the relative sizes to each other. We took turns to work in groups of 3 to orbit the sun; it was especially difficult for the Moon to orbit the Earth whilst the Earth orbited the Sun whilst rotating on its axes!! Phew! This activity helped us to understand night and day and why the seasons change (and made Mrs Hudson very dizzy!!)
Phases of the Moon
Recently, we have studied the phases of the moon. We have looked at the moon's cycle and how it orbits the Earth and why the moon appears to change shape in the sky at night. We have created an 3D cyclic model, an animated flipbook and an edible model using oreos and cupcakes! We definitely know the difference between a waxing Gibbous and a waning crescent (and which one tastes better!!)
