At Eastcroft Park
WE ARE PROUD TO BE HISTORIANS!
At Eastcroft Park, we want our children to love history. We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up wanting to be archivists, museum curators, archaeologists or research analysts. We want them to aspire to be the best they be in all aspects of life.
The teaching of history at our school is underpinned by a commitment to developing a rich, connected understanding of the past that enables pupils to make sense of the world around them. Through a well-structured and carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils build a secure and progressively deepening knowledge of local, British and global history. They explore significant events, individuals, and developments that have shaped society, gaining insight into how the past influences the present.
We want our children to remember their history lessons in our school, to cherish these memories and embrace the historical opportunities they are presented with.
Bringing history alive is important at Eastcroft Park Primary School because we are
proud to be Historians!
Inclusion
We recognise the importance of creating an inclusive history curriculum; one that reflects the diverse backgrounds and experiences of all of not only our pupils but children around the world. We strive to represent a wide range of cultural, ethnic, gender, and social perspectives while ensuring that pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are fully supported in accessing and engaging with historical learning using inclusive teaching strategies such as:
In addition, we promote the use of diverse historical figures and stories that reflect the contributions of people with disabilities and other underrepresented groups. Our goal is to ensure every child, including those with SEND, sees themselves in the curriculum and can engage meaningfully with history.
EYFS
There are two EYFS units focused on each of the history-related Development matters statements. These units consist of a mixture of adult-led and child-initiated activities which can be selected by the teacher to fit in with Reception class themes or topics.
Pupils in EYFS also participate in while school Historical foci such as Black History Month, key Historical figures and Remembrance.
Communication, Language & Vocabulary
Our primary history curriculum is carefully designed to support the development of children’s communication, language, and vocabulary through rich, meaningful learning experiences. As pupils explore key historical concepts such as chronology, cause and consequence, change and continuity, and historical significance, they are introduced to a wide range of subject-specific vocabulary. Words like "empire," "monarchy," "invasion," and "civilisation" are taught in context, helping children to understand and use technical terms accurately and confidently. Through discussions, storytelling, role-play, and presenting their ideas, pupils practise expressing themselves clearly while deepening their understanding of the past. These opportunities not only build historical knowledge but also strengthen essential speaking, listening, and literacy skills that benefit all areas of their learning.
Aspirations
Our history curriculum promotes curiosity and a love and thirst for learning. It is ambitious and empowers our children to become independent and resilient
We want to equip our children with not only the minimum statutory requirements of the History National Curriculum but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Throughout their learning, children are exposed to the many various career paths that History could lead to. History in Action videos explain the careers and work of those in history and heritage-related fields. Historians, archivists, archaeologists, museum curators, teachers and heritage experts discuss their love of history, how they became interested in the subject, how they got into their jobs and what their jobs involve. We strive to inspire our pupils to follow their own passions and explore the many fulfilling careers they could aspire to.
Mental Health
At our school, the primary history curriculum is thoughtfully designed to support children's mental health and wellbeing alongside their academic development. Through exploring the lives, challenges, and achievements of people from different times and cultures, pupils develop empathy, resilience, and a deeper understanding of human experiences. By discussing how individuals and communities overcame adversity, children are encouraged to reflect on their own emotions and the importance of kindness, courage, and connection. Lessons often include opportunities for collaborative learning, open discussions, and reflection, helping to build confidence, self-awareness, and a sense of belonging—all key aspects of positive mental health.
Cultural Capital:
We want our children to use the vibrancy of our great city to learn from other cultures, respect diversity, co-operate with one another and appreciate what they have, with British Values and our core values placed at the heart of everything we do.
We enrich their time in our school with memorable, unforgettable experiences and provide opportunities which piques their interests and passions. We firmly believe that it is not just about what happens in the classroom, it is about the added value we offer to really inspire our children.
Tolerance & Diversity
History teaching is designed to ignite curiosity and nurture a lifelong interest in the past. It encourages pupils to think critically, ask thoughtful questions, and engage with evidence, helping them to develop informed perspectives and sound judgement. Pupils learn to recognise the complexity of historical change, the diversity of experiences across time and place, and the relationships between different groups of people.
By exploring the past in this way, pupils also reflect on identity, culture, and values—both their own and those of others—equipping them with the understanding needed to navigate the challenges of their time. Our aim is to ensure that all pupils leave primary school with a strong sense of historical awareness, confident in their ability to interpret the world through a well-informed lens.
We are proud that our curriculum continues to evolve, reflect diversity and allow children to make connections which are relevant to and resonate with their own lives and experiences.
