  • The summer reading challenge

Tue 12 Jul 2016 Mr Youngman
The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year in libraries over the summer holidays. This national reading for pleasure programme has been running for 16 years and last year more than 800,000 children took part by borrowing, reading and talking about their favourite books.

Each year, there is a different theme and name. This year, libraries everywhere are celebrating 100 years of the world’s favourite storyteller Roald Dahl and the Summer Reading Challenge 2016 is called THE BIG FRIENDLY READ.

    Children who take part:
    • Are more enthusiastic about reading
    • Maintain their reading level over the holidays
    • Boost their confidence and self-esteem

    How it works:
    • Each child (aged 4-11) signs up at their local library
    • Children borrow and read at least SIX library books of their own choice
    • during the summer, collecting special cards and rewards along the way
    • Library staff and volunteers provide guidance and encouragement
    • Children receive a medal and/or a certificate when they complete the Challenge
