Artist Study - Leonid Afremov

In the Spring Term, Y5 studied Leonid Afremov. He was born July 12th 1955 in    the city of Vitebsk. He is a Belarusian/Russian Painter. He grew up in the town        of Vitesbk (the same town where he was born).

Over the last 25 years, he developed his own personal style and technique which differentiates him from other artists. He created beautiful cityscapes of mostly European cities using bright colours and textures. He also painted vintage cars, seascapes, cats playing jazz and flowers.

Some people say his work looked abstract: he used special tools called palette knives to create thick and rough looking textures, usually with oil paints. His work and techniques inspired us to create our our cityscape of Liverpool.

He died 19th August 2019

We analysed and discussed various examples of his work...

Artist Study - Frida Kahlo

In the Autumn term, Y5 studied the life and works of Frida Kahlo.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican artist celebrated for her portraits and self-portraits which explore themes around identity, post-colonialism, nationalism, gender, class and race. Her paintings are characterized by their naive style and strong autobiographical references mixed with fantasy. She was born to a German father and a mother of Spanish and Native American descent. She spent most of her life in her family home, “La Casa Azul”, in Coyoacàn. Disabled by polio as a child, she was also in a crippling car accident at the age of 18, leaving her to suffer from chronic pain and severe health problems throughout her life. It was during her recovery from the car accident that Kahlo turned to painting and came to consider a career as an artist.

We analysed and discussed some of her most famous work:
